This camera is light, small, very intuitive and easy to maneuver. I chose the Canon DC330 over the DC310 because this model has the USB connection. I like recording on DVDs because I need to backup my computer anyway. Sound quality is very clear.
Customer Review: the mini-dvds shown do NOT work with this camcorder
I don’t know why amazon includes the sony mini-dvds on this page, because they do NOT work with this camera! I ordered them based on amazon’s recommendation and they are not compatible. I’m having a tough time finding a mini dvd-rw that will work with the camera. Otherwise, it is ok. The movie editing software isn’t very easy though, but the picture quality is fantastic. Colors are true to life and recording is easy. My two complaints are mini-dvd-rw issue and crappy software for editing.

UPDATE: Spoke to Canon and now know the difference is the plus/minus! This camcorder requires DVD-R/RW (notice minus sign) and cannot use the DVD+R/RW (notice plus sign). When purchasing mini dvds make sure to get the minus and then just about any brand should work (verbatim definitely does).

Canon ZR900 MiniDV Camcorder with 41x Optical Zoom

Bought this camcorder as a graduation gift for my 13 year old niece. She already has an iMac and a digital camcorder so this camera fit in perfectly and she is able to take great videos and edit them in iMovie. She loves to make movies with her ZR900 and the the size, features and price is right.

We already have an entire DVD put together of our 4th of July party just two weeks ago.

I am rating this a 2 only because you HAVE TO use the lousy software that comes with it.I would like to say that J. Henry said all that was going through my head. I don’t have the patience for this…if I could just convince my hubby to try the comparable Sony we were looking at….it just didn’t seem to be as user friendly….that might be something I can learn to deal with and overcome! Great Camera, lousy software and no way around it!
Customer Review: Great Camcorder, easy to use!
This camcorder is great, it is my first dive into the consumer video world and so far I am pretty impressed. The zoom is killer, the ease of use is great. I am a tech so I did not feel the need to install the built in software since I feel that the bundled software stinks, that goes for most consumer products. I filmed a couple of videos, plugged the camera into my pc, and voila! There they were, ready for me to watch and/or edit using any software I wished to use. This process took approximately 10 seconds. For those wondering my setup consists of Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1, but I imagine if I plugged it into xp or the other versions of vista, I would get similar results. The editing software I used is Adobe Premiere elements 4.0, although I am confident that if I plugged the videos into the built in video maker, I would not run into any problems as the format is pretty standard.

I only write this review because I feel some of these low ratings are unwarranted. The camera itself is great, and although the picture quality could use some improvement (then again I have not played with all the settings yet) I think this is a great camera for a lower budget, the only real improvement I could see by going to another camera is if a High Definition camera is purchased.

This is a good camcorder but it definitely needs Firewire. Amazon lists it as having I-Link which is Firewire but it doesn’t. A little slow to transfer data to your computer with USB.

Customer Review: Nice Camera, Hate having to switch modes, GET FIRMWARE!
I will start out by stating that they have released a firmware upgrade (go to the samsung site and search on the model #) that improved (not resolved) my major problem with the camera, the instructions on how to check your firmware release completely didn’t work, so just look at the list of enhancements and it will be clear that you don’t have it. The instructions for installing it were good (although they talk about a file that isn’t there - just ignore that.)

I’m a Mom, so my primary use for the camera is capturing pictures of the kids. The nature of that means I need to have the camera ready to get video or stills at a moment’s notice. Out of box (pre-firmware), if you were in photo mode, you would have to hit the button twice to get it back into video mode. The big problem is that there was a several second pause getting out of the viewing mode. By the time I got to video, my opportunity was lost. I was about ready to return it.

Post-firmware, you can now keep it in video mode and still take photos. (Before you could only take photos while actively taking a video.) So, you just keep it in video mode and you are good. If you accidentally hit the mode button, you are still in the same situation, but I’ll just have to get used to that.

Why on earth they designed it with one button for three modes makes no sense whatsoever to me. There are seperate buttons for taking photos and taking video, so why even have two different modes at all? Just have one button (that’s a little tougher to accidentally hit) that puts it into viewing mode. Or, at the very least, two buttons, one for viewing and one that switches it back and forth between video and photo so that you don’t have the lag time going through viewing. Even if it is only on the touch screen. Hopefully they will release another firmware release that adds touch screen buttons to address the issue.

Aside from that, the grip is weird to get used to, but I think I am going to like it. It does make it easy to hold the camera down low or up high to get better shots. The pictures and video in good light are great. And there is no stutter of the video if you are taking still pictures while shooting video.

You will have to install the included software to view the videos. We couldn’t get them to work with Windows Media Player or Quicktime, even with new codecs. Not a huge deal, just a little annoying.
Customer Review: HMX20C- Mac users perspective.
After returning a different camcorder because of disappointing video quality I researched a bit harder and ended up buying the HMX20.

I am very happy with the Samsung- videos taken in decent light are gorgeous and sharp, well exposed, and with nice contrast. I haven’t noticed compression artifacts or aliasing. Also, the ability to record progressive frames is important as I look at clips on a computer monitor, and don’t really understand the point of recording interlaced images. On the downside, the electronic image stabilization doesn’t appear to be that good, although I haven’t been able to find a lab-test for this. This means hand-held shots at full zoom are pretty shaky, although handheld videos are fine when you are zoomed out. As the widest angle view is not really wide enough (this seems common for the current crop of camcorders) I will probably pick up a wideangle converter at some point.

As other reviews have mentioned, this camera is extremely Mac friendly, and video clips can be played in Quicktime directly from the SD card. This is very convenient, especially since a number of common editing programs dont run on Macs. Look into MPEG Streamclip, a free mpeg converter which has been very helpful.

A full battery charge has been giving me about an hour of normal recording (including zooming and a bit of clip viewing), which also seems to be about right to mostly fill up an 8gb memory card with HD footage.

Overall I have been very pleased with this camera.

I have only had this battery a short time but it meets my expectations. If you are going to have an extra battery, it may as well be a longer lasting one.

Customer Review: Great solid state camera.
This is exactly what we were looking for. We were tired of mechanical camcorders that eventually break down and tapes that fail. The Canon is small, lightweight, and the battery lasts a long time. I added a second 8GB memory chip and we have hours of video between dumps to my computer. I haven’t tried editing the video files yet and will add that review later.
Customer Review: Totally Satisfactory for My Needs
I bought this as a replacement for my Sony MiniDV camcorder. The video quality is roughly the same using the default settings. However, because I can adjust many more settings on this, I end up shooting better video than I could have with the Sony.

I also like the smaller size (you have to see this to believe it) and the flash memory (no moving parts equals faster response and longer battery life).

I mostly use the camcorder for filming my kids and then uploading it for my parents to watch (they live overseas). It’s perfect for that. I download the video to my MacBook Pro, edit in iMovie 08, and then publish to my MobileMe Gallery. It’s a very fast and easy process.

Oh, and finally, I loved the price! All this for only $385.00.

I’ve owned this camcorder for 6 weeks and taken quite a few hours of video and so far can’t think of anything I don’t like about it.
